Marathon's Dedication to Code Compliance

How Marathon coordinates hydrogen service bay design with the codes adopted by your jurisdiction and the requirements of your facility.

Marathon's Dedication to Code Compliance

Published by Hydrogen Service Bays by Marathon Finishing Systems

Hydrogen service bay compliance is project-specific. The design team reviews the adopted building, fire, mechanical and electrical requirements, NFPA 2, the vehicle service procedures and the local Authority Having Jurisdiction’s requirements. Equipment documentation supports that review but does not replace permits, inspections or site-specific approval.

Why Code Compliance Defines a Safe Bay

Servicing fuel cell electric vehicles indoors requires coordinated attention to the work performed, hydrogen release scenarios and the building’s conditions. Applicable codes address detection, ventilation, electrical classification and other safeguards intended to manage those risks.

At Marathon Finishing Systems, code compliance is not an afterthought. It is built into every Hydrogen Service Bay we design, manufacture, and deliver — across our Automotive, Truck & Equipment, and Bus & Fleet product lines.

The Standards We Engineer To

Every Marathon Hydrogen Service Bay is engineered to comply with the following safety and building standards:

  • International Building Code
  • International Existing Building Code
  • International Fire Code, including Section 2311, Repair Garages for Vehicles Fueled by Lighter-Than-Air Fuels
  • National Electrical Code (NFPA 70)
  • International Mechanical Code
  • NFPA 2, Hydrogen Technologies Code

Each project is engineered to the code editions adopted by your jurisdiction.

These codes touch every component of a service bay — the structure, the electrical classification, the mechanical ventilation, the gas detection, and the documented procedures for purge and repair operations.

What That Means for Your Facility

Because compliance is engineered into the standard product, our customers are not asked to translate raw code language into a workable building. Our team has already done that work. The bay arrives ready to be reviewed against your local Authority Having Jurisdiction's (AHJ's) interpretation of these codes — whether that is a fire marshal, a building official, or both.

That dramatically shortens the path from "we want to service FCEVs" to "we are servicing FCEVs."

Safety Is the Primary Concern

Hydrogen is a manageable fuel when it is handled inside infrastructure that was designed for it. Marathon's commitment to the codes above is the foundation for that. Your safety, and the safety of your technicians, is the entire reason these systems exist.
